So Your Looking To Start Your Website?

If you would like to start a business website you will want to have four items ready to go before you begin. Having these tools ready will save you time and frustration during the whole process of setting up your business website, allowing you to concentrate on the task at hand. The tools you are going to want to have handy are an FTP program, your own domain, WordPress or any other content management system, and a web hosting account.

Finding an FTP program does not have to be rocket science; in case you were wondering FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. In layperson terms your FTP program moves your files from point A to point B with point A being your computer hard drive and point B your space on your web hosting account. A good FTP program shouldn’t cost you a dime and once you find one, all you have to do is download the install program and install it like any other computer program you have used in the past. The program that I prefer is CoreFTP which I’ve been using for over 10 years; other popular FTP programs are FileZilla and Smart FTP.

The next thing you want to do is purchase your domain name. Domains used to be relatively expensive to purchase compared to now; I remember paying $40 for my first domain back in 1999, but you shouldn’t be paying more than $9.99 nowadays. One of the most popular places to buy domains is Godaddy.com, but other domain registrars do exist, some more that come to mind are namecheap.com, moniker.com, and Register.com. When buying your domain try to see if the .com version of your business name is available because .com is the most popular domain extension, this will help you with type in traffic that may be looking for you online.

Once you have your domain purchased, it’s time to start shopping for a web hosting package. Since your site is going to be brand new, you are not going to need a lot of disk space or bandwidth, so don’t buy the Cadilac hosting service when you only need a Geo. Keep in mind that you can always upgrade your package as your site starts to get more traffic and larger in size. Most of the hosting packages you can purchase now-a-days are very similar so it really doesn’t matter who you go with. Try to shop around and read some reviews before diving in and signing up with a host; customer service and up time are what you should be looking for when comparing web hosts. The only thing that I have to say is stay away from Godaddy, their packages may be missing something you may need later down the road and you don’t want to switch webhosts if you really don’t have to.

The last thing you are going to have to gather for starting your business website is a Content Management System or CMS for short. You could build a static site, but using a CMS will allow you to make updates and additions to your site a lot easier than with a static site. My preferred CMS is WordPress because I have been using it for a while, I am familiar with the admin section, and it is extremely easy to install. Using a CMS like WordPress will allow you to create pages for your business’s history and driving directions to your store. You can then use the posts to feature products that you sell along with coupons or other specials you have going on. The possibilities are endless for your site.

Tips for Getting Your Website into Google

Getting your website into Google is a must today if you are serious about getting any real traffic/visitors, generally you will find getting listed with Google opens up a lot of doors in terms of getting indexed with other search engines, including many smaller ones that use Google’s index.

Primarily though we are interest directly in Google as that the biggest around, and if your in and ranked well your site will get lots of visitors.

I can only ever recall one time when I actually submitted a site to Google to get indexed, this was when I first started out and thought is was the best and only way of getting your website into Google , although I did get indexed it took along time around 3 months before I got out of the Google sandbox

These days I can pretty much get a new page indexed in around 24 hours, a completely new site in around 48-72 hours, which is so much better than my original 3 months or 2190 hours give or take.

Method 1
Obtain back links from higher ranking sites.
This generally involves a linking campaign which means finding similar sites to yours from Google and sending them an email asking if they would like to exchange links, this can be tough as many site owners/admin’s will not want to link to a lower ranking site as there are worried it may lower the importance of the their site in the eyes of Google, but if you persevere it only take a single site with a page rank or 3 or above to open the Google door for you.
If you cannot get anyone willing to exchange links, or you’re in more of a hurry to get indexed the next way is to simply purchase some links, this only needs to be done for a few weeks until your established in Google.
Links can be purchased from sites such as eBay or by searching for PR links for sale

Method 2
Article directories; Create articles around the subject of your site and submit them to sites such as EzineArticles or Articledashboard add a link to your site from them, and then wait for the article to be approved and Google will recognise this and you should be listed.

Method 3
Setup a Blogger, Squidoo or WordPress account and create a few articles, it does not need to be too much, just a few simple pages with links to your site.

Method 4
Forums and authority sites, many forums allow a link in a post so if you subscribe to a forum, answer a few questions, and you will have a few links back to your site.

The beauty of forums is not only do you get a back link, but you will also get traffic from the site, so make sure the page your link is inline with the content of the forum, other wise it could be considered just spamming links.

Add your sites link to a page in Wikipedia telling the world about your site.

As you can see above everything revolves around sites linking back to your site.

If you manage do more than one of the above that’s even better, you will not only get your site listed in Google, but will also increase your sites importance, which means your site will get listed higher in Google’s rankings, this then means more site exposure and more visitors.

Remember to Google your website every few days to see if you are in yet, the easiest way to do this is to simply type site:domain name (for example site:computer-adviser.com) and you will not only see if your site is in Google, but also how many pages are indexed too.
